The W/C-CHECK software is backed by more than 25 years of successful experience with the determination of the water to cement ratio from fluorescent thin sections in Northern Europe. During recent years the technique has slowly spread into the Americas and Asia. 

Through the camera and microscope, fluorescent light images are acquired directly into the software’s interface. As a next step, the images are color segmented to separate the paste from the aggregate, and the air voids. Once color segmented, the average light intensity of the paste is calculated, and the corresponding water to cement ratio is determined by mathematical comparison to a calibration curve. On each thin section a minimum of ten water to cement ratio determinations are performed. 

Calibration curves are obtained from measurements on thin sections of known water to cement ratios. On each thin section a minimum of thirty measurements is performed. The operator may select from several calibration curves representing different binder systems before performing determination on a thin section of un-known water to cement ratio. The selected calibration curve should match as closely as possible the binder constituents of the un-known sample.
